Treasury is the nerve centre of the Bank or any other organization. With the recent developments in the Nigerian Financial Sector, financial institutions’ funds must be managed effectively to generate the kind of returns that the stakeholders are expecting in the face of global financial crisis, stiff competition, regulatory operations and inherent risk exposures.
This calls for the need for a comprehensive knowledge of treasury management and related risks, as borrowing sources and investment, and in the day to day running of the finances of the bank.
The Treasurer and the entire treasury staff must therefore have this common understanding of profitability, liquidity and safety of which the first two involve a trade off. Entry-level staff might not easily appreciate this. However, after one or two years in treasury, there is a need for a training that will further enhance their knowledge of the treasury function for the over all benefit of the organization.
